KARIKA / About

The studio

A studio in Bangalore, quietly obsessed with surfaces.

KARIKA is a Bangalore acoustic studio with twenty plus years of material practice and one product line of its own. Bespoke walls, ceilings, baffles, screens and lighting in 100% polyester fibre. For architects and interior designers who care equally about how a room sounds and how it looks.

How we got here

Twenty plus years of material practice, now writing its own.

KARIKA is the design-led arm of a Bangalore practice that has been supplying architects' and designers' material libraries for over two decades.

The studio sits in the same building on JC Road that Anil Kumar Goyal opened as Canvas Centre in 2003. A retail showroom for the surfaces architects and designers were specifying and could not find under one roof.

Five years later, as the network of studios grew, the operation expanded into wholesale as Cosmo Floors, supplying vinyl and carpet to studios and contractors across South India. By the close of the decade, the work had been consolidated into Gowell Multi Trade Private Limited.

KARIKA was founded inside Gowell in 2013. After a decade of stocking other people's surfaces, the practice now writes its own. Beginning with one product line where acoustic performance and design intention are equally weighted.

The practice

Designing sound as carefully as surfaces.

Bangalore, India

A panel should solve acoustics without asking for an aesthetic apology. That is the entire brief.

We work alongside architects on workspaces, hotels, public environments and the occasional residence. Nothing is held in stock; every surface is cut, pressed or printed to a studio's drawing. In any of ninety-four colours, on recycled polyester fibre, with the room itself as the unit of measure.

The goal is quiet, not silence. Rooms where conversation, music and material each find their place.

What we hold to

Four values, in the order we use them.

Short enough to remember on a drawing, long enough to argue for in a project meeting.

i.

Craftsmanship

Every detail considered. Every edge clean. Nothing off a shelf.

ii.

Design intelligence

Form resolves function. We read the room, then draw the surface.

iii.

Quiet confidence

The work speaks, not the copy. We keep our voice low and our detail high.

iv.

Material honesty

100% polyester fibre, 75% post-consumer recycled PET (GRS 4.0), zero VOC. Specified in numbers.

Working with us

How a project usually unfolds.

Three phases, in the order we use them. The earlier we join, the better the surface.

i.

Brief & sketch

We read the plan, the elevation and the acoustical target. No sizes yet. Just surfaces and the room.

ii.

Drawing & sample

Configuration, colour, fixing and quantity come back on paper. Physical samples arrive in the post.

iii.

Fabrication & install

Panels are cut, baffles arranged, fittings wired. We attend the installation for the first day.

Material honesty

Specified in numbers.

Four figures that carry most of the technical argument. Full data sheet on request.

In conversation

Start with a brief.

KARIKA is made to specification. The earlier we join a project, the better the surface. And the quieter the room.
